The Marine Iguanas we saw on the other islands were a bit more "drab" - mainly blacks and greys, to facilitate camouflage on the dark lava rocks where they basked to soak up heat. The iguanas on Espanola, however, have this wonderful red coloration. According to one website, this red color comes from their eating a particular seaweed that blooms during the summer months, coinciding with their mating season. I was glad to find one laying out where I could get the Caribbean-like aquamarine color of the water in the background.
