Monk Saki Monkey

I didn't see any of these on my last Amazon Voyage, so was very excited to have several sightings. The long, bushy tail is simply amazing.

Monk Saki Monkey Leaping

A short while after the last shot, this Monkey took a leap to some nearby branches, and I was able to get a few frames in mid-air.

Oriole Blackbird

This bird was only about 30 feet away, a lot closer than we usually saw them, which was nice. The light was quite limited, and I had to go up to ISO 6400 to get an adequate exposure.

Tropical Kingbird Chicks

One morning we did some Kayaking on a tributary, which was a lot of fun. We came across this pair of Tropical Kindbirds in the nest, at the water's edge, just above eye-level, so were able to get some nice tight shots.

White-tailed Trogon

We saw several species of Trogons, including the White-tailed shown here. It seems we almost always see them from the front, or back, so getting a side shot like this was a bit unusual.

Owl Monkeys

Another new primate species for me - we didn't see these at all on our prior trip. Part of our group had seen these up close, and virtually at eye level, on a previous hike, but I wasn't in that group. So I was happy when our guides spotted these guys, but they were much harder to shoot. I had to crouch down at the bow of the boat, and shoot virtually straight up, trying to find a 'window' through the heavy foliage that mostly obscured them. Light was extremely limited, so I ended up putting on my flash to get decent images. I again used Photoshop to get rid of the inevitable redeye with this type of shot.

Capped Heron in Flight

During our last trip, I think we saw one of these, from quite a distance away, and I was unable to get any photos. We saw several on this trip, with multiple opportunities for both perched shots as well as capturing them in flight.

Capped Heron Perched

An added bonus to simply seeing them is that several of them were displaying nice breeding colors, as evidenced here by the blue and pink coloration on the face and beak.

Black-tailed Trogon

A more 'typical' Trogon pose, this beautiful bird was seen during one of our hikes, and it posed for a lot longer than I would have expected.

Hoatsin

This is a bizarre looking bird, and one usualy very difficult to photograph, as they are typically found deep within trees, heavily obscured by leaves and branches. This particular day we were hiking to see the Giant Lily Pads, and unexpectedly, a long ways off, there were 2 Hoatsins perched out in the open. The EXIF data indicates this one was around 145 feet away, and so I had to drastically crop the image to come up with the photo above.

Short-tailed Parrot

We were visiting one of the villages, on our way to have a session with the local Shaman, when this beautiful parrot was spotted up in a tree, in reasonably good light.

Yellow-headed Blackbird

Our ship was tied up to the shore one evening, and when I got up and went to to see what was around, spotted several of these beautiful blackbirds. It wasn't long after dawn, so the light was very dim. This photo was taken at ISO 12800, but cleaned up fairly nicely using Neat Image.

Red Backed Poison Dart Frog

This beautiful frog was seen during one of the jungle walks we took. It is actually quite small, perhaps an inch or so in size, and I used my 100mm Macro Lens, with a Macro Flash attached, to get this photo.

Bird-eating Spider

This was one of the cooler invertebrates I've seen on this, or any trip. It's hard to appreciate the size from this photo, but it was probably in the 6-7" range.

Striated Heron

Very similar to the Green Heron common in the southeastern USA, we actually saw several of these during boat rides on the tributaries, but they all flew as our boat approached, and I had been unable to get a single shot. This one was taken during our last day on the river, with the light rapidly disappearing (hence the 6400 ISO), so I was glad to add it to my collection.
